Thibault Masse

Smartengo Best Fit Business Owner, Vallourec, France

Thibault joined Vallourec in 2013 to support the ramp-up of a partnership manufacturing facility in South Korea. After 2 years, he went back to France to manage technical sales for Process and Line Pipe products for Asian markets. In 2017, he relocated to Shanghai, China, with an extended scope that covered Line Pipe products industrialization in Tianda mill, a recent acquisition from the Group. Benefiting from his product expertise and technical sales experience, he was appointed Smartengo Best Fit Business Owner in November 2019.

Smartengo Best Fit - a digital revolution for welding assembly operations

Smartengo Best Fit Business Owner, Vallourec, France

Smartengo Best Fit is an innovative digital solution to transform pipe fit-up operations. It relies on an advanced algorithm providing a full batch of pipes compatibility analysis, and a smartphone app to be used in full autonomy by welding staff. This results in optimized welding assembly operations.

Providing pipe-end dimensional measurement and using unique pipe-end ID technology, our advanced algorithm provides a deterministic analysis of all possible pipe-end combinations and then anticipate operational constraints. With a simple mobile app, welders on the firing line can instantly identify pipe-end compatibility area. An as-built digital tally of the line pipe construction is automatically generated in an easy-to-exploit format and alert functionalities. All these operations won’t require any additional personnel on site.

A report provides a full batch deterministic Hi-Lo analysis by considering all possible pipe-end combinations. Unique algorithms transform pipe-end geometrical data in its resulting Hi-Lo. Report includes tailored recommendations to mitigate risks associated to Hi-Lo specification compliance considering all operational constraints.

During welding operations, no sequencing is required. By scanning two random pipes intended to be welded together, the field app provides live recommendations on the pipe rotations to respect welding requirements.

This results in secured line pipe assembly workflow, improved weld quality and production time reduction by minimum 10%. Significant savings up to 75 K$/km are observed.

Innovation lies into bringing full autonomy: in the field, the solution is a simple mobile app to be used by the existing personnel. No additional workforce on-board is required. Additionally, compared to existing solutions, Smartengo Best Fit brings a deterministic analysis instead of a probabilistic one, and does not require sequencing - thus removing the need for extensive pipe handling.
