Keynote Speech: Cybersecurity for Midstream Operators: Lessons Learned from Colonial Pipeline

While 2020 and COVID-19’s work from home changes brought significant focus to IT cybersecurity, 2021 has been the year of OT cybersecurity headlines. A series of ransom and double-ransomware attacks on process industries have made consistent regional headlines this year. But for pipeline operators and the world, Colonial Pipeline’s multi-day interruption and the gas shortages on the East Coast of the United States were truly a blockbuster. Beyond costing millions in remediation and lost revenue, the Colonial Pipeline attack resulted in U.S. Government action affecting midstream operators and more regulations are likely worldwide. While Siemens Energy’s equipment was not affected by these attacks, we think they provide useful lessons to the entire industry. First, they are a strong reminder that without confidence in the OT network, operations literally cannot continue, so visibility on the OT network is critical. Second, it shows that “air gap” security strategies are obsolete. Finally, it puts a spotlight on the criticality of automated backups of all OT devices.
